Each year, The Delft Perspective works with an artist who creates one or more works relating to the subject of the year. For The Delft Perspective on Security, Hozan Zangana will make a series of sculptures, on view at the Waalse Kerk from 20 November 2022.

Hozan Zangana
Hozan Zangana is a Kurdish artist and designer, specializing in sculpture and functional objects. At the age of fifteen, he fled to the Netherlands, where he studied, a few years later, at both the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam and the Design Academy in Eindhoven. His first collection of abstract objects was based on a Kufic script and called ‘Vormen uit Intuïtie’ or ‘Shaping from Intuition’. It was exhibited in Dubai, Milan and New York. In 2017, Hozan was nominated for the Wallpaper* Designer Of The Year Award. He made an installation for the Dubai Fashion Week, a collection presented at the Boijmans van Beuningen Museum in Rotterdam.

Hozan finds inspiration in language, tradition and rituals. According to him, these are the most fundamental, intangible elements in our world. Also, he often makes use of passions from his childhood and his experiences as a refugee in the Netherlands as a basis for his artistic ‘perspective’. He enthusiastically engaged with his work for The Delft Perspective on the subject of security and has developed strong ties with the participating communities. In this way, he has created an image (literally and figuratively) of the meaning of security; a subject that has been a constant theme in his life since childhood.

“To me, security is something temporary, varying according to conditions at a certain moment. If it’s raining, you feel safe under an umbrella. If the sun is shining, you feel safe in the shade.” – Hozan

“In the midst of the chaos of the world and its eventful history, Hozan Zangana restores silence. He works in meditative concentration; once the ratio is silenced, his heart and hands can speak freely. This is how his objects come into being; they all tell a story containing a message for years and years to come, he hopes.” This is true, too, for the works of art Hozan has made for The Delft Perspective on Security. The four works will be on display in the Waalse Kerk from 20 November 2022, as part of the museum, and a free, public exhibition open to visitors.
